From melody to song

The songs you find from here are not actually songs, they are melodies for the songs. Songs are made from melody ( voice track ), lyrics and arrangement ( set of simple melodies for the background instruments ). After these things are done the singer comes, and adapts the lyrics with voice track. Quite often she also fine tunes the voice track. Besides the singer, band members deal the arrangement to instruments. Then they adapt the arrangement to each and every instrument. When the arranger is a band member or making new arrangement to a known band, the arrangement is divided to instruments at the same time the arrangement is done.

Often singer and band members come to see the first three music makers, and ask them to do changes to the things, which do not work in the final song. The experienced singers and band members do the changes ( at least the smaller changes ) by themselves. The adjustments by the singer and band members are done at the same time, they practice the song. The practicing takes usually quite long time.

After artist and band members are ready to play the song, they go to studio, where the song is recorded. During the recording the tracks are manipulated and the recording levels are adjusted electronically. After the recording, the tracks are almost always manipulated digitally. Boys' songs are hardly ever manipulated. Sometimes the volume levels are adjusted. When we make songs, we always keep the live performances in mind. Try to avoid tricks which cannot be done on stage. Or which would make our live performances unreal.

Anyway. After the manipulation is done, the tracks for the song are gathered ( mixed ) into a single file ( master file / tape ). During the gathering process, the volume levels of each track are adjusted. Before the mixing all tracks are mono tracks. During the gathering, the mono tracks are divided artificially to multiple channels. In music making usually to two channels. When stereo came, the mono tracks were mixed to either left or right channel. In the late 60's studios started to use stereo head system. In stereo head system you do not place the instrument on one channel. You adjust the balance / volume levels between the channels. If the guitarist for example stands on the left, the guitar track is divided so, that guitar plays slightly louder on left channel, and so on.

After the gathering process is done, the song is ready. The master file / tape is used to make copies from the song. Nowadays almost all studios use digital masters.

When we do music, we always keep an additional break after the song is ready for release. We call the break finalization stage. During the finalization stage, we listen the ready made song every now and then. And check how it sounds now. If there is something strange in the sound, the song is taken back to the workshop, for making some minor changes to it.

+ + + +

During finalization we usually check the durability of the song. In the durability test the song is played many times in row, without breaks. The sound of the song changes after you have listened it few times. By the time errors, tones which are repeated too many times and poorly made parts comes out, and starts to crack in your ears.

During finalization stage we often test the songs with a small test audience. Ask people, who haven't heard the song before, to listen it, and tell us how it sounds.

In commercial music making the record producers usually check the songs for durability and other finalization stuff.. The old fashioned record producers are almost always listening the unreleased music from their latest productions.

Songs are durable goods

One verse in the song is usually around one minute. When melody is full length melody, the whole verse has unique notes. And the melody lasts also around one minute. When melody is not full length, it is repeated two, three and sometimes even four times within one verse. Writing good full length melodies is not easiest thing to do in the world. Skills to write long melodies comes by the time and experience.

A good short melody is better than poorly made full length melody. When the melody is good and short, you can add life and durability to your song with arrangement and additional attractions.

The movies are almost disposables when compared to music. After watching a movie for 10 times, you put it to your shelve, never come back. In the music durability of the song is very essential thing in music making. Song which tops the charts, should last at least 100 repetions. When you make a song over a good full length melody, the song is more durable. You / listeners do not get bored with the song as quickly, as listeners do when song is made from shorter melody.

The most popular songs ever have good, long, durable melodies and long, touching  lyrics and good arrangements. It is possible to conquer the number one spots in the charts with good melody / good lyrics / good arrangement only.

? Before the album or single released it is usually tested for durability. The person who does it, is usually record producer. He plays unreleased songs in everywhere and all the time. So that he / she  can check how the song lasts.

Money

Big money or sales based fees goes to the creative people and performers. Artists, composers, lyric writers and arrangers get their money from the sales and copyright fees.

From the performers studio musicians do not usually get the sales based fees. They work for the record company with more or less regular paychecks. Some works as freelancer with the same system.

There is a huge international database system, which hold records from the people, who are eligible for the sales / play count based copyright fees. You must register your compositions, lyrics, arrangements and songs to the system, before you can get copyright fees. Signing yourself into the system costs app 100 euros per year.

? The world biggest illegal music distributor is You Tube  / Google. Napster was a midget when the numbers are compared to the pirates You Tube / Google distributes to the world.

Registration is needed before for example 3rd party can use melodies from Boys melody pool. Registration has very little to do with actual copyrights. Copyright begins from the day your creative work is done.

From the live performances and tours, a recording artist usually gets most of the money from the boost in song and album sales. If your tour for example gathers 80 million euro grosses from the ticket sales, it does not mean that your bank account is credited with 80 million euros. Touring costs a lot, and organizers takes their share from the money. Most of the recording artists has fixed fees for the live performances. The rest ( profits or losses ) goes to the organizers.

Some bands and musicians are concentrated to the restaurant and live performances in general. These warehouse rockers makes their living with the money they get from live performances.
