Don't know. They compress air before warming. No idea, how much compression reduces the amounts of energy, you need for heating air. Never used or even seen these pumps.

Combustion engine's heat losses are 4 times bigger than produced pressure energies. Not 2 times, like it was said yesterday.

Don't know. Pulp factories and nuclear plants are my guess. Pulp factory pollutes waters. Poisonous water plants and others can be found from over 100 km distance from the source. Current tech boils wood with fresh river water. After boiling used water is led back into river. Enormous waste water amounts cleaning systems are primitive and cheap. Nuclear plant pollutes both air and water with it's HF and HF-U emissions. Distribution range is bigger than pulp factory's.
Traffic, which is big city-air polluter, is not an industrial branch. Traffics pollution come from high compression engines, catalyst converters and burned dirt. Annoying smog became a problem after engine's compression ratios were raised to over 8 or so. You don't die or get sick from smog.

How about steel, Swedish Vattenfall's current center of interest ?
In principle iron mining and steel making processes are emission free processes. Pollution and emissions come from heating method, which is used for melting iron. After mechanical cleaning, iron-mining-process has a step, where iron is cleaned with fire. Burned additional substances pollutes and can pollute air. Pollution goes with per-mine principle.

Typical iron field is accompanied by carbon field layer or layers. In eruptions hot lava burns organic materials. Most from the black layers and spots are carbon, not coal. Oxygen in carbon layer can cause explosions. H₂O in carbon layer and mine can result into birth of new CxHx compounds. Methane or CH₄ is the most common mining gas. When water molecule gets broke, it releases one oxygen atom, this oxygen breaks another water molecule. After that 2+2 hydrogen atoms grab one carbon atom from the actual Carbon layer. This chain of reactions can take place during mining, when you release compression / tensions from the field.

In the beginning you usually get raw materials for most common constructional carbon-steel from the same mine. Quite often iron mine runs out of carbon before iron. After that you can burn coke and get carbon to steel from CO2 emissions. Alternatively you can shift into enhanced steel qualities.

Clean coke is easier source for carbon than messy black layer. Nowadays mined black layers are quite often thrown directly to trashes or hauled to some coal mine. Steel, which is made with coke, has better / steadier quality.

No one has measured how long smog remains air-borne. Street level gray smog should be born from morning's rushes. After home-coming rushes are over, smog should start to slowly vanish.

Why do steel makers use coke-coal instead of raw carbon ?
No idea. Possible, that the fault is in terminology. And the coke is another name carbon, not for coal. If the same mine produces both iron and carbon, the added black matter is mostly carbon.  When you mix black matter into liquid iron, coal burns. Hot, liquid iron probably breaks formed carbon dioxide to oxygen and carbon .And leaves water untouched Oxygen and water comes out as gas-bubbles and carbon is left into mixture.

Based my literal explanation to source. Carbon is the only thing. city and city traffic produces in the scale, which can  form densities, which makes smog and dust visible to eye. Carbon and carbon dioxide are the only bigger "unnatural" things, traffic adds to air.

Indoor dust is born from breathing and cigarette smoking. Shoes bring sand and small rocks into house. They do not convert into dust. Ventilation freshens the air, but weekly dust creation remains unchanged.
Organic dust is food for plants, just like ashes. Indoor flowers and plants eat dust and keep the closed spaces cleaner.
In big cities boulevard, with center and pavement tree rows reduces traffics smog creation.

At millennium time I started wonder, what happens to heat energies: These thoughts ended into a connection in between macro and atom level energies. Oxygen content of hi-altitude air is not known yet. When speed raises, air volume you get to fuselage in one second remains almost unchanged. Fuselages ventilation system must made so, that it can handle hi-speeds. Estimation is, that hi-altitude air's oxygen content is close match to on-ground air's oxygen content : When you compress hi-altitude and space air into 1 bar pressure, space-air becomes breathable.

With gearbox you can adjust compressors rotating speed so, that jet flow's air speed in stays above planes speed. When you raise to higher altitudes, plane's air resistance falls all the time. This allows you to increase compressor's rotating speed, without making any changes to power turbine's rotating system. And also without increase in fuel consumption.

Open rocket engine leads pressure to combustion chamber with curved air inlets, combustion chamber and fire is shaped so, that inlet areas in combustion chamber has very low pressure. Electric open rocket engine has similar kind of system. Open rocket engine expands surrounding air with burned fuel. Open rocket engine's fuel consumption is around 1/10th from rocket engines fuel consumption. Open rocket engine lighter than closed rocket. Open rocket engine's firing chamber is designed with fire-proof, transparent glass construction and colored inlet air. Hi-speed cameras can take around 20 000 frames / photos in one second. You can use the same glass cylinder-tube systems with combustion engines and others.

You cannot construct fuel balls to intercontinental air-liners from the trashes in old dumps. Trashes from old dumps must always be burned with 2000 to 3000 C temperatures.
