In general you should never make direct connections between the characters actresses / actors play, and what they are in real life. There are many reasons for taking some role in a movie. If an actress / actor is not in a position to select the roles, getting the role and work is usually main thing in playing some role and character.
Natalie got interested in acting when she was young. Fulfilling her childhood dream has given her inspiration, motivation and strength to make a long series of excellent acting performances in movies. She has played leading female roles in 19 full length movies now.

When talking about leading and supporting role, the division is far from clear.
In Academy Awards' pre-ballot, where the final 5 nominees are elected, it is possible to vote any person from the movie to the leading and supporting roles. Usually leading role means, that you play the most visible character in the story. Supporting role is almost as visible as the leading role.
If there is more than one visible character from the same sex, it is often difficult to say which one is the leading actress and which one is supporting actress. Usually both visible actresses get pre-ballot-votes for supporting and leading actress.
In the past it was possible for the same actress to get nomination in both categories. Nowadays rules prevent such thing from happening.
If a person gets enough votes for nomination in both categories, less popular nomination is given to someone else. If you get more votes for supporting actress and you get enough votes for nomination in leading actress category, you will have nomination in supporting actress category only. And someone, who got less votes for the leading actress, will get the nomination in the leading actress category.
The changes to win the award are better, at the expense of value of the award.
When Miss. Portman was nominated for supporting actress in Closer ( 2004 ), Mrs. Roberts was more popular and famous than she. The fame made Mrs. Roberts the leading female actress in Closer.
