Terminology
Production Budgets

Production budget is the most famous word for the cost of the movie making. It is usually used to describe the amount of the money, the production team is allowed to use for the production.

In big movie companies, a movie maker asks money from the executives, and the production budget is the amount of money he gets for her / his production.

In smaller companies, the production budget is usually the amount of the money, the producer / movie maker manages to gather for the production.

Cost calculations

Besides the ordinary cost calculations  movies have also a cost calculation system, which is based on the time line and production flow.

Above-the-Line Expenses

The money which is spent to the movie before the production begins. The section includes purchases of the story and rights to the story. Wages to the story writer and other wage payments which takes place before the production begins.

If the project is bought or inherited from another company, the cost of purchase belongs to this section.

Below-the-Line Expenses

This section includes all physical production costs not included in the above-the-line expenses, including wages, fees, material costs, music rights, publicity, trailers, etc.

Negative Cost

Negative cost is the total cost of the movie production. The money which used in distribution and marketing is not included this amount.

When production budget is an estimation from the money which will be spent on the movie, the Negative cost is the amount of the money, which was actually spent during the production. The production budget is made before the production begins, the negative cost is calculated after the movie production is finished.

P&A

From this cost calculator category we find all the major distribution costs.
- The cost of making copies from the movie
- The delivery costs
- Advertising and promotion costs.

Budgets

The budgets have been removed from the calculator. Besides production budget, movies have also a marketing budget. Marketing budget is usually 10 to 25 % from the production budget. If you have a movie with 81 million production budget, in order to be profitable art work, your movie have to gather over 96 million worldwide net grosses, and app 198.1 million total grosses.

Most of the money goes to everyday businesses. Ads in newspapers, theaters, street sides near the theater and so on. Theaters usually pay the regular costs. Huge budget movies have 2 to 3 times bigger color ads in the papers. Things like this makes the difference. The promotion material, like posters, come from the distributor and production company.

TV ads and other special promotions are usually paid by the distributor and producers. The calculator do not calculate shares between distributors and producers. Quite often the production company and the distributor are the same. In independent productions, the share is always negotiated for each movie. ( Independent movies are movies, which are not done by the big studios. It is the only difference they have to other movies )

Explanations

Weekend Grosses :
The movie grosses usually follow a certain formula during the weekends. Depending on the genre and the time of the year. With most genres Saturday is the most popular day. And on Sunday there is a big drop compared to Saturday grosses. Default values for the fields are general values, and not very accurate. The calculator works with all weekends and in all countries.

Total Grosses
The opening weekend is the most important weekend for the movie. The share from overall gross varies quite a lot. From 20% to 50%. The calculator can be used in all countries for country level calculations. Usually the movie grosses drop app 41% per week.

The movies do not live very long in the theaters. The life lasts from 6 to 10 / 12 weeks depending on the opening grosses. Even the billion dollar Star Wars movies died in 12 weeks. The grosses drop into marginal levels.

Mrs. Portman's Black Swan is an example from the movie which didn't follow the ordinary formula. We had exiting moments with her Oscar hopes. After the opening, it looked like, that the Black Swan will never get the required $5 to $6 million grosses from U.S. The movies like Black Swan are called sleeper hits.

Mrs. Portman's No Strings Attached, is an example from the movie which followed formula obediently. It made only $10 million bigger grosses than we estimated after the opening weekend. The weekly drop was smaller than it is with movies in general.

World wide Grosses
World wide grosses are heavily dependent on the degree of distribution. With bigger budget movies the default of 60% is average the movie gets from overseas markets. Bigger shares means, that there is something wrong with marketing and / or distribution.

Divide Grosses between theaters and producers
The grosses from the box office are divided between theaters and distributors + producers. Distributors and producers have mixed financing system. It makes it impossible to estimate how much the producer or distributor gets from their share. Theaters get a big deal of their income from soft-drinks, pop corns, candies and other things people buy at the box office.

Brd and Dvd sales :
Theaters are the most important source of income to the movie business.  After-theater incomes are almost always in a close relationship with the success in the theaters. And the  amount of the aftermarket money also depends heavily on the distribution agreements.

In general Brd / Dvd sales is about 30 - 40 % from the theater grosses. From that the shopkeepers and others take about 50%. From disc sales you get your money as a bunch, almost right after discs come out from the press. The whole sellers and shop keepers buy the discs you press, and you get the money by the time the discs are purchased and delivered to the whole sellers.

Broadcasting right sales

Broadcasting rights are another bigger source for the income. It takes many years before you get money from the broadcasting. From broadcasting rights you get almost everything to yourself. In the calculator rights are estimated to be 10% from the theater grosses, the estimation is based on few known agreements. You can change it.

First money comes from Movie Channels, and then from common broadcasting companies. Movie Channels buy the latest movies all year long. The broadcasting companies usually buy movies / rights 3 times a year, every year. There are marketing events for them. The broadcasting companies live in three seasons, Spring, Summer and Autumn. The buyers almost always work in different department than news and gossip people. They have their own broadcasting times, which they fill with the staff they buy.

Totals

After you have performed all calculations, you can get the totals from them.

? If you want to calculate U.S. grosses and numbers only, you can put the Overseas share to zero in the calculator. In this case you have no overseas distribution for your or your favorite movie.

You need big grosses for the base group when you use this calculator. EU-wide numbers could also be used instead of U.S. grosses. Small base grosses are too inaccurate.
