Genre is a hint about the contents of the movie, and the story it tells.

Genre describes the type of the story / the movie. There aren't classified genre systems. They are just names, which are commonly used with movies. These classifications are used on this site. They follow the general classifications. The mixture of the Genre classification is usually formed from the words and meanings, which are described here. The main genre is usually evaluated with a simple calculation. In a single movie there are almost always scenes and clips from more than one genre. The main genre is the most common genre type within the movie.

The popularity of different genres and subtypes has made classification quite messy. The most popular sub genres are used as main genres, and so on.

Anyway-Yeah. Comedies and dramas are the main genres of the movies. Drama is a serious movie, and comedy is a laughing stuff. A Comedy-Drama movies never exists. Dramas can have comedic features, and comedies can have dramatic features. Action movies for example are either Action Dramas, or Action Comedies. Action drama is the official genre-name for the traditional action movie. 

The fourth main movie genre could be Family movies. These movies are made mainly for children. They have certain rules and formulas, with what they are done.

Dramas

Drama is usually a story from real life. Serious story. The lack of funny and exiting scenes is typical for drama. Drama does not mean, that the movie has sad story or ending.

- Everyday Drama : This classification is unique to the site. Everyday drama is movie from everyday life.

- Melodrama  : Melodrama is a subtype of dramas. Melodramas are sad by their nature, and they also have a sad end. The story is usually related to love.  Melodrama is the most popular drama type. Quite a many movie with only drama classification, is actually a melodrama. Melodramas could be described as a sad stories from everyday life and ordinary people.

- Historic Drama : Historic Drama is common drama type. The story is placed to history, and at least one character ( or event )  is taken from real life. There are two types of historic dramas. Another one is a documentary like story, which tries to follow the historic events. Within the limits and requirements of the media. Time and the flow related things are the most common reason for inaccurate content.  Fictional drama tells a story where the characters are real and the events are fictional. Due to the limitations, most of the Historic dramas are mixed movies. They have real and fictional events. The division is done by the number of real and fictional events. Periodic movies takes also place in history, they are completely fictional stories.

- Romantic Drama  : Two of the most popular movies of all times are romantic dramas. Gone with Wind and Titanic are both members of this subtype. The main plot is a sad love story without laughs. Typical for the Romantic Drama is that the romance takes place in the middle of disastrous events, usually war. Quite often the war or what ever, has a historical connection. The disastrous event is taken from the real life and history. Almost all movies with happy love story are classified as Romantic Comedy. 

- Romance  : Romance is a love story from everyday life. In romantic movies, word drama is used to describe the dramatic features ( war, etc ) in the movie. Romance is serious story about love. Movie is not not guaranteed to have a happy end, and so on.

- Relationship Drama  : Relationship Drama is unique to this site. Relationship drama is much like romantic comedy. Drama tells, that the story is a bit darker. Relationship refers to a thing, that there all kinds relationships in the movie. Besides the woman-man getting married relationship.

Comedy

Comedies are movies to which you are allowed to laugh. Without getting movie makers angry. Comedies can be made from almost anything. There are  Romantic, Action, and Sci-Fi comedies. Comedy is the first major movie genre. Movies made their breakthrough with comedies. Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton and other pioneers of the movie industry were comedians.

There are three main types of comedies. Action comedy makes you laugh with circus like funny actions and looks. Verbal comedy concentrates on dialogues. In technical comedy the fun is made with editing, and effects. The comedy types are not separated in Genre classifications. They are all said to be comedies. Almost all comedies have scenes from all three comedy types.

Comedic features are not very rare in drama like movies.

Romantic Comedy

Romantic Comedy is the most popular comedy, made mainly for women.  Romantic Comedy is not necessarily very funny. It is an action movie substitute for the female audiences. Romantic comedies have slogans, simple stereo types, simple stereo solutions. The action scenes, just like stereo types, are slightly different than they are in action movies. From a romantic comedy you find astonishing wedding scenes, exiting relationship systems, hot kissing scenes, and so on.  

Almost all movies with happy love stories are classified as Romantic Comedy. Possible that the man-made classification comes from the thing, that the men who perform the end and wedding scenes, in real life, are usually laughed quite a lot.

Action

Action movie tells a story with speed and exiting / astonishing events. Audio visual effects are typical for action movies. Slogans, stereo types and stereo solutions belong to the action movies. Visualization is a word for action movies, stories are usually quite simple and straight forwarding stories.

- Crime Action :  In crime action movies, the leading characters are usually outlaws. In Action ( without prefix) movies leading character are fighting for law.

- Sci-Fi Action : Sci-Fi action is very popular sub-genre. In Sci-Fi action the events take place in space or in future.

Sci-Fi Adventure

From the Sci-Fi Action genre we can find the most popular movie genre for the grown up people. Although hardly ever mentioned, officially Sci-Fi Adventure genre is a sub genre of the Sci-Fi action genre. Getting yourself nominated as a main genre comes from the popularity, not from the contents of the movie ( from which the genres and sub genres are always originally and officially generated ).

Typical for the Sci-Fi adventures is a Fairy Tale like dream world, where the action takes place. Expensive Sci-Fi Adventures are the best looking movies of all.

Besides the good looking settings and costumes, the Sci-Fi Adventure movies have astonishing Special, Visual, Special Make Up and Sound Effects. The production budgets are in a close relationship, with way Sci-Fi Adventure movie looks. Most of the money is always spent to looks and effects. The lack of top billing Mega-Star actors is quite typical for the genre. Try to save money  to the things, from which the genre is famous for.

Star Wars and Avatar are the best known ( and also the best selling ) movies of the genre. Although the Romantic Dramas are the best selling movies, Sci-Fi Adventure is the best selling genre for grown ups. They dominate all time gross lists with multiple best seller movies. Easier to make successful movie to the Sci-Fi Adventure genre, than to the Romantic Drama genre.

Thriller

Thriller is much like an action movie. The difference is how the excitement is generated. 

Thrillers have complicated plots and scripts. They do not usually have exiting chase scenes and astonishing explosions. Like the action movies have. Exiting camera drives from confused characters and others are quite typical for thrillers. 

Almost all of the excitement comes from the script and sequence of the events. In other words you should never reveal the plot of the thriller to a person who hasn't seen it yet.

Psychological Thriller : Psychological thriller is the most common thriller. Actually it is so common, that the Psychological subtype is quite often dropped away from the classification.

Detective Thriller : Detective thrillers were very popular in the past. They are nowadays very rare, detective stories are done to the Action movie genre. With astonishing visual effects, and so on.

Family

Family movies are made for children. Not forgetting, that children usually come to theaters with their parents.

There are two bigger sub-genres in family genre. Fantasy movies have magic in them. Visualizations from classic fairy tales are examples from this subtype. In Animal movies the leading roles are given to dogs, cats, horses and so on. Old Lassie movies are probably the best known animal movies.

In the Family genre, sub genres are usually combined with the method of visualization. Animated children movies are very common, and most of the animated movies are nowadays made for children. 

Fantasy : Family Fantasy is a movie with magic and real actors.
Animated Fantasy : This type is an animated movie with magical features.

Animal Movies : Animal movies are movies, where animals are in leading roles..
Animated Animal Movies : This type is an animated movie, with animals in leading roles.

When you see Fantasy or Animal genre in movie's genre classification, without any prefixes, the movie is almost certain to be a movie for children. The assumption can be confirmed from the movie's rating. Action and Sci-Fi Fantasies for example are made for elder audiences.

Animated Fantasy is and has always been the most popular movie genre. Followed by Fantasy movies.

Sci-Fi

Sci-Fi is an additional genre description. Sci-Fi is a word which tells, that the movie is a vision about additional or forthcoming reality. Usually Sci-Fi movies are visions from the future. The best known Sci-Fi movie Star Wars takes place in the past. Sci-Fi classification comes from the thing, that the Star Wars world is much more sophisticated than our world.

Sci-Fi Adventure is the most popular Sci-Fi genre, it is a sub genre of the Sci-Fi Action genre.

Besides Sci-Fi action, there are Sci-Fi Comedies and Sci-Fi Dramas.

Quite a many thing of the modern world was originally introduced in Sci-Fi movie or Sci-Fi book. Engineers are dull people, who search solutions for practical problems. They need help from the people, who have an ability to invent and introduce new things. After they get an inspiration from a Sci-Fi movie, they start to think how you can manufacture this thing. And finally the thing you saw in a Sci-Fi movie ends up into your living room.

Sci-Fi movies are also defenders of Democracy and civil rights. Flow of horrific Sci-Fi movies about totalitarian state usually starts right after power keepers try to get complete control over their citizens. In the 1930's Nazi's and Commies raised a wave of horrific Sci-Fi books and comic books. Computers raised a Sci-Fi wave in the 1980's. Could also mention, that Mrs. Portman's U.K. made V for Vendetta was released quite soon after U.K. government established dense surveillance camera network to London.
