Garden State is a romantic comedy with drama features

Andrew is mentally disturbed young actor, who lives in Los Angeles. After his mother dies, he comes to the funeral, which is held in his home town.

Andrew's father is a psychic. He asks Andrew to visit local doctor. While waiting his turn Andrew makes friends with Sam. Sam is a young woman, who lives with her mother.

Andrew takes Sam home, and the friendship starts to develop to a relationship.

Andrew and Sam spend time with Andrew's old schoolmates.

Closest schoolmate Mark is nowadays a gravedigger.

One of Andrew's schoolmates has made a fortune with an invention, and boys spend lots of time in his mansion. They have wild parties, with all kind of silly action and so on.

Andrew's relationship with his father is not the best possible. Sam on the other hand has a good and straight relationship with her mother and black step-brother.

Mark decides to give Andrew a special farewell gift before he leaves. Sam, Andrew and Mark have to visit many places before Andrew gets his farewell gift.
